Anne felt as if she was floating, dimly aware that she had to fight to regain consciousness if she was not to lose it for ever. Above her she could see something whirling. It was slightly out of focus but, try as she might, she couldn’t make it any clearer. Then, with one momentous effort, she screwed up her eyes and when she opened them again she saw that she was staring at circular patterns in the plasterwork of a bedroom ceiling.

For a moment she was confused. How had she come to be there? The last thing she remembered was…what? The past was a blank, at least the recent past was. Further back she could remember an interview. She was enlisting in the police force. She could remember small-arms training, a run, a passing-out parade. Yes, things were starting to return. She could remember a building, a police station, she thought, and then a briefing, the details of a close-protection job.

With sudden embarrassment she remembered Dave and the kitchen table, and flinched away from the recollection as if there was someone else with her inside her mind who might see her being screwed that way. But she had liked Dave. It wasn’t the first time they had had sex. She couldn’t call it lovemaking; she was too truthful for that. The first time had been in a patrol car on a stake-out, the tenseness of the situation adding to the thrill of the act. Then there had been the second morning of the present assignment. Alec had been out and the Indian gentleman had been asleep. It had been early morning and she was in the shower. Dave had been on watch throughout the night and had come in to shave. They had done it there, on the bathroom floor. She had had to bite her lip to keep from making a sound, but it had been great. The best.

She tried to move and winced with sudden pain. What the hell had happened? For an instant she thought it might have been the sex, but this was a very different ache and far less pleasant. With a shock she remembered seeing the Indian staring at her from the kitchen door. It had been terrible. Until then it had been terrific. She saw again the stairs as she padded up them to wash. Dave had laddered her stockings but she hadn’t bothered to change them. Who the hell was there to notice in the safe house?

Image by image the past swam back into view. She had gone downstairs and then…yes, there had been the question of the lights, Alec’s voice, the Indian’s caution, and then…

She turned her head and a bolt of pain rocketed down the length of her back and legs, reaching to the very soles of her feet. With the vision, however, came the noise, drifting in as if from a far distance. She became aware of the sound of shooting and then of the air around her being alive with fragments of wood, concrete and plaster.
